HBO is confident that ‘True Blood’ will still work with the absence of showrunner Alan Ball as it renews the bloodsucking stories from Bon Temps, and after only two episodes, it’s already renewed Aaron Sorkin’s ‘Newsroom’ for another season.
The Jeff Daniel’s starrer ‘Newsroom‘ was HBO’s third highest dramatic series premiere behind on ‘Boardwalk Empire‘ and ‘Game Of Thrones‘. Aaron Sorkin’s first show on cable tv follows the inner-workings of a cable news network. Naturally since this aired not too long after the Keith Olbermann/Current TV debacle, many are assuming ‘Newsroom’ was inspired by the public meltdown, but Sorkin says “not so“. Sorkin’s previous tv shows include Sports Night, The West Wing and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, but HBO is giving him a lot of freedom (meaning not a big pressure to have stellar ratings since the would rather have and Emmy & Oscar winner on their team) so he’s also working on A Chauteau Marmont miniseries at HBO, based on the book Life at the Marmont. He’s working with ‘The Office’s’ John Krasinski on this forary.
Meanwhile, the drama in Bon Temps will continue for another season with Mark Hudis (Nurse Jackie) taking over for Alan Ball as showrunner while he remains Executive Producer. I have a feeling that this could be the final season since when Ball left ‘Six Feet Under’ to work on other shows, that show suffered creativly. Ball has put his all into Seaso 5 of ‘True Blood’ and it’s definitely keeping the action going even though the viewership was lower for the premiere over last season. Poor Jacob Hopkins got snuffed out early in last night’s episode after it his character was marketed to seem like he’d have a much bigger role on the show than he actually did. That’s a shame since that could’ve been a very meaty role, but Christopher Meloni is proving to be quite good at playing head Vampire. Ball is moving on to work on his Cinemax dramatic series, although those two words (Cinemax & dramatic series) don’t gel well since it’s still looked at as the T&A channel for late night viewing.
