roger federer faces andy murray, djokovic and del potro out of olympics 2012

Roger Federer will be facing Andy Murray at the 2012 London Olympics Games at Wimbledon after defeating Juan Martin Del Potro. The big shocker was Murray aggressively going after Novak Djokovic and beating him for the first time. Plenty of images from both games to check out below.

Andy Murray is a great tennis player, but many were expecting the 2012 London Olympic Games to come down to Novak Djokovic facing off against Roger Federer. Murray, who’s never defeated the Serbian player changed all that on Day 8 after a brilliant 7-5 7-5 match. The 25-year-old player will now earn at least a silver medal and will now have the chance to make it gold in a repeat of last month’s Wimbledon final. Murray was very impressive in yesterday’s victory over Nicolas Almagro, and he’s obviously riding that momentum now that he’s taken Djokovic out of the running and will face off against the mighty Roger Federer. This is why this year’s Olympics have gotten NBC some of their best ratings; things are changing on a dime, and expectations are thrown out the windows as people like Michael Phelps are showing their back to keep breaking history while Ryan Lochte had a quick beginning, but that seems to be dimming some now.

Now, Federer is just one more victory game away from earning his first single’s gold medal, but he’s got one more obstacle to overcome. The quickly building momentum of Andy Murray will be a game to watch. Like Murray, Federer is guaranteed to earn at least a silver medal, and this final battle of the titans will determine who gets the gold. The 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 19-17 victory over Juan Martin Del Potro lasted nearly four and a half hours which surpasses Rafael Nadal’s victory over Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Masters in 2009 as the longest three-set men’s singles match in the Open era.

Juan Martin Del Potro is one of the few men not to care for grass play as he’s lost five times to Federer already on that landscape. Del Potro really gave it his all, but after such a long time, it finally came to a halt for him, and now he’s left to recover earning his bronze medal.

As you can see in the photo montage below, Del Ponto worked hard to defeat the Federer phenom, but you can see the various stages he went through on the journey to beat the Swiss man. It was an amazing match to behold and if you’ve not watched it, check it out now!

She writes it as she sees it and many have the war wounds to show for it. When I say 'sources' unlike other sites, I mean REAL life sources!

your so.... dumb... lol. He wants his kids to watch him at an older age, they only 2 years old. Mirka would want him to play as long as possible too

Let's hope. If he keeps playing well and still loves it why should he stop then :) A few more years of Federer will be great. As for where he said I don't know I just remember a few years back I was watching tennis and the commentator said he mentioned he might retire at Wimbledon/OL.

where did he say that? he likes the travel and playing tennis, he wont retire before 2014 he can still stay top 3 for a couple more years i'd say

I believe he once said that he would retire after this OL in Wimbledon. But he might have changed his mind, I as a fan of him. Would rather see him go now and still see him as the star he once was and still is. There are younger and fitter players coming.

The point of sports is to be greedy. It's fun watching people who are dead set on winning competing with one another. That's where the spectacle comes in.

I didn´t like her comments, like he can´t win the golden medal in Rio because he will have 34 by then, doesn´t she remember that he is Roger Federer considerered the best tennis player in history and someone who by 30 years is number one again and beats the 20´s guys. This man is unbelievable :)

That's a weird comment. The whole purpose of competing in sports is to win - to perform at your highest level. What do you think athletes are busting their humps out training for? To lose? huh? - that's weird.
