‘Nurse Jackie‘ has come back with a bang this season, and with the addition of ‘Dexter‘ showrunner, Clyde Phillips, the Season 5 renewal should be even more intense for Edie Falco and the crew at All Saints.

This season of ‘Nurse Jackie‘ was easily the strongest in some time, and I actually felt myself getting emotionally invested again in Edie Falco’s many faceted character. The addition of Bobby Cannavale was a major boost of adrenaline for the Showtime series, and his character has now turned All Saints on its ear as he’s emotionally firing anyone who helped enable Jackie. This past week’s episode literally had our mouths agape as he fired Gloria and that troubled pharmacist after learning that Jackie knew his drug addled son (real life son Jake Cannavale plays him) and was in a New York City drug rehab with him. It was a beautifully drawn arc as Jackie’s new roommate suggested moving out as people who know too much about you wind up on your shit list sometimes. Cannavale seems to have become the go to guy for TV shows needing some sex appeal and charisma infusion, and he always delivers. Sadly, I’ve learned that he won’t be returning for Season 5 though as he’s now on HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’ this fall. I guess after his Dr. Mike Cruz goes on this firing rampage, All Saints suffers and he gets ousted. We’ll see since Phillips has taken a real liking to Cannavale as many of us that have known the actor over the years.

Not surprising, the show was renewed after ratings surged again, and now with Phillips joining Richie Jackson and Caryn Mandabach as executive producers next season, there should be another great infusion of creativity kicking in. ‘Nurse Jackie’ will star filming in the fall, and expectations will be high for the Season 5 premiere next year. Our Showtime source is saying that Season 5 is expected to be it’s last as Falco know when it’s time for a show to leave. So expect a mind blowing send off if this remains the case. It’s better than the ‘United States Of Tara‘ sendoff at least!
There’s only two more episodes for this season so if you’ve not seen any episodes yet, they’re so worth watching! Falco will easily get another Emmy nod for this season! She’s gotten all of us rooting for her again.
