Peter Berg’s boardgame turned to film ‘Battleship‘ has hit with a first look so we can see the types of films a director has to barter with to get their real passion project made aka ‘Lone Survivor‘.

I’ve liked Peter Berg after his amazing directing job he did in ‘Friday Night Lights‘, so I was surprised when it was announced that he was helming boardgame to big screen ‘Battleship‘ which isn’t the type of property to have such a storyline that it’s screaming for a film adaptation. However, after finding out that this was his deal so that he could make his true passion project ‘Lone Survivor’. Robert Redford was put in the same spot back in the 90′s when he had spent years trying to get ‘A River Runs Through It‘ made, but the studio was pretty cold on that one until it was suggested he do ‘Indecent Proposal‘ so that he could get his passion project made. ‘Indecent’ wound up being a huge hit, and Redford got to make the beautiful ‘River Runs Through It’ so everyone was happy.
After checking out the ‘Battleship’ trailer, I’m not sure if the studio will be so happy, but at least Berg gets to make the movie he really wants to. The action looks like a high seas take on ‘Battle: Los Angeles‘, but Taylor Kitsch is no Aaron Eckhart. Thankfully, he’s surrounded by talent such as Liam Neeson and Alexander Skarsgård. I’m sure I’ll get hell from someone at Universal, but c’mon guys, can’t you try at least for some originality on the big screen?

Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgård, Josh Pence, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, Jesse Plemons, Peter MacNicol, Tadanobu Asano.
Director: Peter Berg.
As you can see from the one line synopsis above, don’t expect much originality just plenty of action with aliens and high seas alerts.
Battleship hits theaters right before next Memorial Day on May 18, 2012. Thankfully, we’ve got the next ‘Batman’ installment hitting next summer to look forward to.
