After taking in a worldwide haul of over $400 million, it was to be expected that Chris Hemsworth would be bringing his ‘Thor‘ back to planet Earth in Summer 2013, but Kenneth Branaugh won’t be helming, and there’s still a question mark for Natalie Portman.

Marvel Studios just gave the greenlight for ‘Thor 2′ which wasn’t a surprise, and Chris Hemsworth’s back wielding his mighty instrument. Summer 2013 is just beginning to fill out with more superheroes as ‘Avengers‘ will be hitting the screens along with ‘Iron Man 3′ on May 3, 2013 so ‘Thor 2′ may be hitting screens near the same time as this year, which was extremely smart planning.
I’m assuming Joss Whedon’s name will be tossed around a lot in the next few months as Kenneth Branaugh won’t be returning to helm the sequel. I loved ‘Thor‘, and while some may say that Marvel is right in benching Branaugh, I think he did a killer job on the original. Hopefully, the next director won’t lose the freshness that Branaugh brought and just turn it into another action filled movie without much depth. We can only hope.
The other question mark is if Natalie Portman will be returning to reprise the love interest role, but from what we’re hearing, they’ll be a new girl for ‘Thor 2′ to work his instrument for.
Disney and Marvel Studios are working hard today trying to find a good slot for the sequel since they’ve already got ‘Iron Man 3′ staked in May, and we’ll probably know something alter today to take with you for the holiday weekend. If you’re already feeling comic book superhero fatigue, 2012 is going to full with ‘Batman The Dark Knight Rises’, ‘Spider-Man‘ and ‘Star Trek 2‘ and others, it’s not slowing down in 2013 with Marvel on such a big roll.
