Megamind Tops Box Office With Unstoppable Due Date Behind It
Indie Genius Best Movies Ever
‘Megamind’ topped the box office again with Unstoppable and Due Date right behind it. As we predicted, ‘Skyline’ and Morning Glory had very weak showings.

1. Megamind 3D (DreamWorks Animation/Paramount) Week 2 [3,949 Theaters]
Friday $7.9M, Saturday $23.3M, Weekend $30M (-34.5%), Cume $89.7M
‘Megamind’ suprised many people after it was trailing ‘Unstoppable’ on Friday and then it turned up the head on Saturday and kept it’s spot on the Box Office Top Ten for the second week dropping a modest 34.5%. Megamind should enjoy this stay since it will easily get pushed down next weekend when Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 hits screens. (We’ll have our review of it up tomorrow).

2. Unstoppable (Fox) NEW [3,207 Theaters]
Friday $8.1M, Saturday $9.9M, Weekend $23.5M

‘Unstoppable’ might not have been number one, but it was right on track (yeah, we know) with Tony Scott and Denzel Washington’s last film together ‘The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3‘ and Washington continues on a long roll of films that have opened at more than $20 million. We loved it and the film tracked well in all age demographics including 25 and above so it should stick around for a few more weeks.

3. Due Date (Warner Bros) Week 2 [3,365 Theaters]
Friday $5.5M, Saturday $6.6M, Weekend $15.5M (-52.5%), Cume $59.1M

‘Due Date’ took quite a big dive at 52.5%, most likely due to word of mouth that this film wasn’t anything close to The Hangover. Todd Phillips won’t have anything to worry about though with Due Date not performing so well since all the publicity surrounding The Hangover 2 so it’ll do well when it comes out next year.

4. http://bestmoviesevernews.com/skyline-movie-review/ (Relativity/Universal) NEW [2,880 Theaters]
Friday $4.7M, Saturday $4.4M, Weekend $11.7M

Best Movies Ever got many e-mails not liking our review of ‘Skyline’, but then we found out that many of them originated with people at the studio, and then when even Rotten Tomatoes has it at 10%, we knew our review was right on the mark. The original box office number we received on Friday claimed $12 million for the low rent sci-fi film, but even they were overestimated. Skyline suffered from a crappy script and filmmakers thinking that special effects would save their film from criticism, but audiences have grown weary of that stunt, and shoving all the best parts into the trailer hoping that will bring people out.

5. Morning Glory (Paramount) NEW [2,518 Theaters]
Friday $3M, Saturday $4M, Weekend $9.6M, Cume $12.2M

Best Movies Ever called this one too sadly since we like Rachel McAdams and Diane Keaton, but even with Harrison Ford onboard, Morning Glory wasn’t able to generate any word of mouth or much else. Morning Glory’s downfall was in a script that was too formulaic for it’s own good and didn’t know whether it was trying to be like Working Girl or Broadcast News.

6. For Colored Girls (Lionsgate) Week 2 [2,127 Theaters]
Friday $2M, Saturday $3.2M, Weekend $6.8M (-65,4%), Cume $31M
Tyler Perry suffered his worst drop for one of his movie with ‘For Colored Girls’ at over 65%. His movies usually fall fast, but this is a record for him. Best Movies Ever finds it a waste of good talent in the cast for that film which could have been done so much better in the hands of someone who knew what to do with good material.

7. Red (Summit) Week 5 [2,878 Theaters]
Friday $1.5M, Saturday $2.2M, Weekend $5M, (-40.9) Cume $79.7M

‘Red’ is still hanging in the Top Ten with good reason.

8. Paranormal Activity 2 (Paramount) Week 4 [2,403 Theaters] Friday $1M, Saturday $1.3M, Weekend $3M, (-57%) Cume $82M

Another favorite of Best Movies Ever, Paranormal Activity 2 is hanging in nicely and we’ve already heard that Paramount is already putting the next installment in the pipeline.

9. Saw 3D (Twisted Pictures/Lionsgate) Week 3 [1,976 Theaters]
Friday $970K, Saturday $1.3M, Weekend $2.8M, (-64.4%) Cume $43.5M

‘Saw 3D’ makes another huge drop, and we won’t see this back on the charts until it hits DVD.

10. Jackass 3D (MTV Films/Paramount) Week 5 [1,607 Theaters] Friday $775K, Saturday $1M, Weekend $2.3M, (-53.5) Cume $114.7M

Jackass 3D is Paramount’s golden good franchise having brought in nearly $115 million with a $20 million budget. We had fun with it and Paramount has got Jackass 4 lined up for next summer.

Best Movies Ever really liked 127 Hours and have kept our eye on it since Fox has been platforming it. Well it had another killer weekend averaging over $20,000 per screen. It should continue it’s strong slow growth through the fall.
