Universal has had a revolving door or directors trying to land the job of helming their ‘Ouija‘ movie. Yup, another movie based on a boardgame, and McG and Breck Eisner made the short list.

Now with ‘Battleship’ and ‘Monopoly’ games being made into movies, Universal is determined to gets its ‘Ouija‘ movie out the gate. The search for a director has led to quite the revolving door as the studio envisions the board game to be made into a franchise series ala ‘The Mummy‘ and ‘Indiana Jones‘.

Yeah, we know. It seems that since the remake market has finally gotten so oversaturated, games are the next big thing for Hollywood so don’t be shocked if we don’t hear about Hungry Hungry Hippos or Connect Four, especially if one of these films does well.

Here’s how it’s been shaking down with the directors that didn’t make the cut on ‘Ouija’. Our sources have confirmed that Pierre Morel (Taken) seemed like a sure bet to direct the film, but then something was said that someone at the studio didn’t care for and then it was leaked that his presentation wasn’t up to snuff for their vision. Our sources at Universal say that isn’t quite right since everyone was happy with Morel at first. Then came Sylvain White (The Losers), Scot Stewart (Legion) and John Moore (Max Payne) who all tried hard to impress, but Universal just wasn’t buying. We like Sylvain White, but our source said that his meeting was more of a courtesy since he didn’t have a shot since ‘The Losers’ didn’t make the kind of box office they want the director of ‘Ouija’ to have under his belt.

So over the past couple weeks McG (Charlie’s Angels, Terminator Salvation) and Breck Eisner (The Crazies) have made their pitch, and from what we’re hearing and even The Hollywood Reporter has reported, it looks like it’ll be down to these two. The execs at Universal get to think it over during the holidays. Two good sources way up the food chain at Universal have told us that it’s looking like McG will be getting this gig since his take was more in line with what Universal was looking for. The project already has a script completed by Tron Legacy writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz and is being produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. “McG let them know that he can be ready to shoot out the gate on this film much quicker than Eisner so there pretty happy with him right now,” we were told.

Best Movies Ever would actually like to see Breck Eisner get the gig since we liked ‘The Crazies’ which didn’t hit the mark with many at the box office, but this could be a good film for him. You’d think this film would more supernatural horror (as many horror films have used this game quite well), but Universal wants another National Treasure, Mummy type film.

With a release date of November 9, 2012, Universal is going to have to make their decision, although it sounds like it’ll be McG on this one.
