After all the stops and starts, ‘The Lone Ranger‘ movie is finally going, and Disney’s put out their official first look at Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in the lead roles.

It looked like Gore Verbinski’s ‘The Lone Ranger‘ movie was headed for the sunset, but after taking pay cuts, the Disney film is all good to go and be released next year with Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. In the image above, I can’t stop thinking that Depp looks like a Native American version of Captain Jack Sparrow. Hammer doesn’t have the strongest screen presence, so I have a feeling this film will be very Depp dominated, and then there’s also Helena Bonham Carter who’s quite the presence. This is a big role for Hammer to prove that he’s a lead actor so we’ll see how it goes for him.

Some people may wonder if Depp’s Tonto will be over the top since that picture would lead one to believe, but he had this to say in an interview. “I remember watching it as a kid, with Jay Silverheels and Clayton Moore, and going: ‘Why is the f—ing Lone Ranger telling Tonto what to do?’ ” Depp said last year. “I liked Tonto, even at that tender age, and knew Tonto was getting the unpleasant end of the stick here. That’s stuck with me. And when the idea came up (for the movie), I started thinking about Tonto and what could be done in my own small way try to . . . reinvent the relationship.”

Here’s what Disney’s description of ‘The Lone Ranger’ is. From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski comes Disney/Bruckheimer Films’ THE LONE RANGER. Tonto (Johnny Depp), a spirit warrior on a personal quest, joins forces in a fight for justice with John Reid (Armie Hammer), a lawman who has become a masked avenger.

‘The Lone Ranger’ also stars Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter) and Tom Wilkinson (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) and is directed by Gore Verbinski, who worked with Depp on the Oscar winning animated film Rango and the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

I think it's funny to see non natives play native parts. Growing up native we (Native American or American Indians whatever the PC world chooses to call us today) Never gave a crap. In fact we were quite amused and entertained. I hope it's funny.

I researched his back roots I didnt see any real native american. I found English and French. Sorry but most people claim Cherokee who are from Kentucky. But his great great great grandparents can be straight back to Europe. I wanted to research this before I posted. Sorry but fact is better than fiction and maybe he dont even know himself.

Hey don't forget this is s Disney Movie ! Also looking at Johnny's head dress, looks like his still trying to figure out Why a Raven is like a Writing Desk ? And the White Face, still left on from Dark Shadows ? Dreadlocks from dear old Jack ? Do you think his getting a little confused maybe ? But what ever , it's always lovely watching him do his thing. Love him x

I have my doubts about this new approach to the story of the Lone Ranger and Tonto. After glorifying criminals in a host of movies, movie makers now seem to be set on ridiculing some of the foremost icons of justice. Let's wait and see what comes out of this project. What I sure don't need is yet another Johnny Depp comedy.

i would be really interesting to see depp play a role that he hasn't done in every movie he has ever had.... why is it that he makes every role a goofy queer drug addict and you all love it?
