We got several calls already about ‘Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work‘ and ‘Catfish‘ getting dissed by the Academy Awards for the shortlist Best Feature Documentary category and many conspiracies are stirring up.
Publicists are working overtimes already calling us at Best Movies Ever about why Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work and Catfish got dissed by the Academy Awards for Best Feature Documentary. We’ll share some of what we’re being told and then tell you what we really think since we’ve seen the bulk of the fifteen documentaries that got culled down to 15 from a record 101 features.
So far, we’ve had several hundred e-mails pour in (mainly from the same places but different names) explaining why their obvious clients didn’t get on the Academy Award shortlist. We saw both of these films and really liked both Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work and Catfish, but this was a very tight year for documentaries, which is a very good thing. With Joan Rivers, the calls and e-mails are saying that not getting on the list was because she’s pissed off so many people with her outspokenness and not backing down on saying what she feels about various celebrities. Hell, I’ve listened to Joan Rivers since I was a kid and loved that about her, but in all fairness, in another year, her story could have gotten a nomination, but this was a year unlike any other.
It’s hard to go up against Pat Tillman, Eliot Spitzer, the education system in American and the economic meltdown. Joan Rivers: A Piece Of Work is a really great documentary, and I hope more people get to check it out, but this wasn’t it’s year.
Now for Catfish, I can’t believe the stories that are getting stirred up and have been stirred up. This was a film that we really enjoyed, and it should have been put in theaters much better. The marketing push was so hit and miss on this one, it didn’t make sense. The heat on this one was really good for so long, and then the distributor Relativity seemed to have not capitalized on it. There were so many towns that wanted to see this film and it never got there, plus there was the controversy about whether it was fake or real. That was no surprise since the filmmakers kept trying to be so cute and clever in their interviews that it made even us at Best Movies Ever have to question the authenticity of the film. Either way, even if Catfish was deemed 100 percent pure, this wouldn’t have been the year for it either.
It’s just the simple story of bruised egos not paying attention to the fine films they were competing with and didn’t quite measure up to them. That’s it. The short list of 15 documentaries will soon be whittled down to 5 so I’m sure we’ll hear more stories then.
