In honor of the ten-year anniversary of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring‘, Peter Jackson put out another great ‘Hobbit‘ production diary video on his Facebook page, but you can check out in a much larger form down below. For a movie like this, I have to check it out as big as I can get it, and I know there’s plenty of you size people like that too!

This is a great diary as it covers how complicated trying to shoot on location can be, and it gives you an idea just how big this film is going to be. For all of us filmmakers, it’s just a fun ride through Peter Jackson land.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Movie Synopsis
“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian Holm, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Graham McTavish, Ken Stott, Aidan Turner, Dean O’Gorman, Mark Hadlow, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Peter Hambleton, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter, Christopher Lee, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mikael Persbrandt, Lee Pace, Stephen Fry, Cate Blanchett, Sylvester McCoy, Jeffrey Thomas, Mike Mizrahi, Bret McKenzie, Ryan Gage, Barry Humphries, Conan Stevens, and John Bell.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will have its theatrical release Dec. 14, 2012. “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” will be released Dec. 13, 2013.

Oh and theater owners usually cut corners that dumbs down whatever 3D experience they intended for you to have. The people he's taking about that have seen test footage have seen it with everything the way it should be... your average joe won't.

I just don't think 3D is needed. Its really just a distraction from the movie its self. I'm more of a fan of IMAX experience.... 3D just doesn't do it for me.

Oh man, those amazing artists at the end are my heroes, such practiced skill! I'm definitely jelly. And people need to realize that crappy 3D movies are crappy because of last minute conversions to 3D, meaning they were not methodically made to suit a 3D experience like this obviously is. And 3D doesnt have to be a lame gimmick, it can be a way of further immersing ourselves into the world of Tolken, something I think we all want amiright. I trust Jackson, he knows his shit.

@jonathandmanning i'm just gonna reiterate what everyone else has already said. it's shot in 3d, which is better than what you usually see. and there will be no loss of clarity since it's starting out at a much higher resolution than most films
