Disney Blames ‘John Carter’ For $200 Million Loss

disney blames john carter movie for 200 million operating loss

Sadly, we knew this was coming with the horrific marketing that was done for ‘John Carter‘ so Disney can now blame the film for having to write down $200 million in operating losses. This is the Mouse House’s fourth year in a row in writing down a hefty budget fiasco.

John Carter‘ seemed to have everything going against it for some time now, so with Disney putting out that the Taylor Kitsch starrer has cost them $200 million for this quarter, that just seems like it’s kicking a dead horse. Naturally, the Mouse Trap had to put this out for investors, but many were speculating a loss of $100 to $165 million, but those numbers went even higher. The sad part is that ‘John Carter’ wasn’t an awful film, but one that became the red headed stepchild for Disney’s marketing team. Many will try to blame negative press for the box office, but there have been way worse movies that have survived negative press and reviews and made some major money…the last ‘Pirates Of the Caribbean’ movie being a good example.

‘John Carter’ has grossed $184 million worldwide, but once all the splits and Hollywood studio accounting is complete, it’ll never come close to recouping whatever the actual budget was. Director Andrew Stanton tried to go on the defensive at one point, but that only made matter worse since most moviegoers didn’t care or really know about the film anyway.

Walt Disney John Carter Loss Statement
“In light of the theatrical performance of John Carter ($184 million global box office), we expect the film to generate an operating loss of approximately $200 million during our second fiscal quarter ending March 31. As a result, our current expectation is that the Studio segment will have an operating loss of between $80 and $120 million for the second quarter. As we look forward to the second half of the year, we are excited about the upcoming releases of The Avengers and Brave, which we believe have tremendous potential to drive value for the Studio and the rest of the company.”

As you can see, Disney was quick to point out their more promising movies ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Brave’ to reassure investors who’ve not forgotten Mars Needs Moms, The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. ‘John Carter’ will probably do find on blu-ray/dvd and might even turn into that cautionary tale that Hollywood studios will promptly forget and say it couldn’t happen to them. Taylor Kitsch is probably praying and doing everything in his power that ‘Battleship‘ doesn’t turn out as bad as many are expecting to give him a little longevity in Hollywood, but we’ll see. At least there’s the ‘Friday Night Lights‘ movie coming up…and I have a feeling he won’t be so reticent to take part in it now.

A 250,000,000 budget, what a waste of money. This movie is unbelievably stupid.

i liked the movie for its visuals and the choice of actors. but other than that, i personally think it was a disaster-they changed almost ALL of the plot in comparison to the novel. Where in the book everything made sense, and followed some logic, in the movie it was the opposite. i felt that a lot of scenes were not very natural and in some way forced. Tthe biggest failure was in capturing, or rather lack of it, the emotional change in the characters and thus Barsoom, influenced by John Carter.

I couldn't stop laughing throughout this movie, its a silly movie but i had fun. During ll the jump scenes, just play the Mario Bros sound effect in your head, you might get a kick out of it

This movie is definitely worth watching WITH an OPEN mind...and it definitely is worth the 250,000,000 budget seeing something wonderful as this. I hope to see a sequel for this movie because it certainly will surprise you...especially those trolling around.
