Showtime made the easy decision to renew it’s hit ‘Dexter‘ for a sixth season after the stellar fifth season with Julia Stiles.

After Showtime’s ‘Dexter‘ amazing last season, many fans and critics thought the series, based on a serial killer (Michael C. Hall) with an interesting moral code, wouldn’t be able to top John Lithgow’s Trinity killer performance and powerhouse ratings, but Season 5 brought in the show’s second highest ratings ever. Many thought that last season’s shocking ender would be hard to top, but bringing in Julia Stiles as an interesting partner for Dexter was very smart and made for a great season.

Best Movies Ever was glad to see Rita go last season even though we’ve always liked Julie Benz (Angel). Her character had gotten very one note, and most times when she was onscreen, we couldn’t wait for it to be over. Still, we were wondering how Dexter could top her exit last season, but they did it wonderfully. We had recently seen Julie Stiles in ‘Cry Of the Owl‘, which wasn’t a great film, but it gave us a real appreciation of her acting, and Dexter only showcased her amazing skills. She was the perfect character for Dexter to heal his own wounds with, and we’re just sad that she won’t be returning for Season 6.

Thankfully, Showtime is smart enough to realize what a great show they have. “This is the easiest decision I’ve made since I got to Showtime,” entertainment president David Nevins says. We’ve dealt with Showtime for many years now, especially with documentary head Valerie Meraz-Watts, and with good reason, since the cable network has taken over for HBO in amazing original programming.

Dexter got seven Emmy nominations this year with good reason, and it heads into production this upcoming spring. Thankfully, Michael C. Hall’s health has been fine after his Hodgkin’s lymphoma last year. ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ star Andy Whitfield hasn’t been so lucky.
