The Weinstein Company suddenly changed John Wells’ ‘The Company Men’ to a January release eight days before its’ December Oscar push release.

While it’s normal for movie dates to get changed around, The Weinstein Company is raising eyebrows with their sudden decision to switch the release date for the Ben Afflack starrer ‘The Company Men‘ to January 2011, just eight days before it’s actual release. After it’s great reception at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, it was looking like The Company Men would be given the Weinstein push come Oscar time, and then with Ben Affleck’s ‘The Town’ film surpassing everyone’s expectations, it seems a no brainer that Harvey Weinstein would also work to capitalize on this. But this isn’t looking like another good year for The Weinstein Company as the only viable film it seems to have in its arsenal is Colin Firth’s ‘The King’s Speech‘. ‘The Tillman Story‘ doesn’t seem to be generating the buzz it should be and with ‘Blue Valentine‘ still in NC-17 limbo, it seems that Harvey is just going to be focusing solely on the Colin Firth film since it’s generated the most buzz.

We’ve gotten a lot of calls about this one, and from what our sources at the company and from the film all say is that John Wells is not happy with getting what many called ‘Weinsteined’ which is shorthand for selling your film to The Weinsteins and after hearing how much marketing and promotion it will be getting, suddenly finds itself in a very limited run or just straight to DVD. Naturally, the canned pr word is that it’s such a crowded marketplace already this month with ‘True Grit’, ‘Black Swan’, ‘The Fighter‘ and even the Weinstein’s own ‘The King’s Speech’, but our sources tell us that since the film is getting oddly mixed reviews already and was left left out of the Indie Spirit Award nominations along with the National Board Of Review this week, the decision came rather quickly to make the change.

Naturally, they’ll give ‘The Company Men’ it’s Oscar qualifying run as has been promised but our source at the company said, “Don’t expect to see much of an Oscar push for The Company Men since Harvey would rather put all his eggs in ‘The King’s Speech’ basket, and they don’t have the Oscar campaigning money they once had.”

If you’re not familiar with The Company Men, here’s what it’s all about. Bobby Walker (Ben Affleck) is living the American dream: great job, beautiful family, shiny Porsche in the garage. When corporate downsizing leaves him and co-workers Phil Woodward (Chris Cooper) and Gene McClary (Tommy Lee Jones) jobless, the three men are forced to re-define their lives as men, husbands, and fathers.

Bobby soon finds himself enduring enthusiastic life coaching, a job building houses for his brother-in-law (Kevin Costner) which does not play to his executive skill set, and perhaps the realization that there is more to life than chasing the bigger, better deal. With humor, pathos, and keen observation, writer-director John Wells (the creator of “ER”) introduces us to the new realities of American life.

Best Movies Ever got to check out The Company Men at Sundance, and it’s a really good movie that deserves better than this.
