Even though we’ve know it was so, Christopher Nolan made it official that he won’t be involved in another ‘Batman‘ reboot or with the ‘Justice League‘ movie that got a jump start after the box office bonanza that was ‘The Avengers‘. Nolan’s now focusing keeping Zack Snyder on track for ‘Man Of Steel‘.
Christopher Nolan already said that ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘ is his final ‘Batman‘ film, but people still assumed he’d be part of the Warner Bros Batman reboot and the in development ‘Justice League‘ which just doesn’t seem likely to really happen. Plus the face that he was Producing Zack Snyder’s ‘Man Of Steel’ movie. The original Justice League included Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and the Flash. The way the big and small screen has treated Wonder Woman lately, it seems like she would work better in an ensemble. We already know ‘The Green Lantern’ just plain sucked, so this project has got some issues to overcome already. ‘The Avengers’ only had ‘The Incredible Hulk‘ films not doing so well, but in an ensemble, the Hulk shone bright.
‘The Avengers‘ set a high bar and was a really good movie. When studios start trying to copy each other, it always winds up with diminishing returns and results. Then those copycat studios just turn around and blame internet piracy for their film underperforming. When Justice League was reported, everyone assumed Nolan would be tapped for that since he created a whole new franchise with Batman, making many of us who saw the 80’s and 90’s versions forget they even existed. The bar was low to start with when he took on the Bat franchise, but Nolan still wound up setting a crazy high bar so I don’t envy whoever takes on the reboot as they’ve got very large shoes to fill.
In is own words, here’s what Nolan had to say about the projects. “I’ve got no plans to do anything more, and certainly, no involvement with any Justice League project. We’re finished with all we’re doing with Batman. This is the end of our take on this character.” There is a lot hype over all the latest super hero movies that have been released. As for the Warner Bros reboot, he had this to say, “Batman will outlive us all, and our interpretation was ours. Obviously, we consider it definitive and kind of finished. The great thing about Batman is he lives on for future generations to reinterpret, and obviously, Warners will have to decide in the future what they’re going to do with him,” Nolan said. “We’ve had our say on the character.”
Warner Bros President and COO Jeff Robinov said this in March of this year which led many to believe Nolan would be continuing on in the Bat world. “We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…” says Robinov. “Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.” It sounds like Nolan was just nipping those rumors in the bud since their’s been plenty for his final film in the franchise.
I’m sure Warner Bros will see how ‘Man Of Steel’ does at the box office before really stepping up the ‘Justice League’, but Snyder has also stated that his Superman wouldn’t really be in line for a crossover. As we know with studios, if a film makes enough money, all rational logical thought of consistency goes out the window and it becomes about maximizing the bottom line whether the fans like it or not.
