It’s time to get your Wicked on with Image Entertainment’s latest horror movie starring Justin Deeley (90210 & infamous International Jock model) and Devon Werkheiser. Quite frankly, I wasn’t expecting a lot from this film after seeing the clips since it looked like the usual CW types going off into the woods proving they’re not afraid of the big bad witch. I’ve seen other reviews really tear into this film, but trust me, I’ve seen so much worse (Bryan Loves You) comes to mind. The first half of the movie works out best as they develop the relationships. Justin Deeley (Zach) and Devon Werkheiser (Max) are brothers who can’t stand each other, etc., but the most promising one is between Max and Sammy. Sadly the relationship development is dropped in the second half of the film and I felt like the scenes outside were much more interesting than inside. Inside is where you can tell this film was a very teeny budget and low budget CGI blood always sucks.

I’ve worked on plenty of low low budget horror films and making realistic blood from scratch is not that hard. The story is basic enough about a local legend where a witch comes to eat you when you break a window in her house. If kids were throwing rocks through my windows, I’d be ready to do some damage to them too! The Wicked is definitely much better than many low horror indie pics out there…it’s not great that’s for sure, but it’s worth checking out. Fed Ex really messed up on us with the 2012 UFC Ultimate Fight Collection so after checking it out with another fellow reviewer I am back to talk about how freaking amazing this box set is! It’s the perfect gift for anyone who loves MMA and everything UFC! If you really love your MMA fan, you’ll pick this one up for them.

I’ve been all over Anchor Bay’s 2012 UFC Ultimate Fight Collection, and have covered it pretty heavy on here so when my editor told me I’d be reviewing it, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy. Then we waited…and waited…my sad little face at the window watching every time the Fed Ex truck drove down the street but didn’t stop. Then we found out that they claimed to have delivered both my review copy and a copy that we were going to give away. It’s the first time Miss Sashay had to calm me down as I was pissed! Fed Ex still hasn’t found this, and they’ve been rather lackadaisical for my tastes. This is the UFC MMA box set I’ve been dying to see, but they just didn’t seem to be as intent on finding it as I’ve been.

Luckily another buddy was reviewing it so I got to hole up a couple days and watch all 20 DVD’s, and I was in pure bliss. I love MMA (Mixed Martial Arts for those that don’t know) and the Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts are just one of the best sports on tv. Yes, I rank it up as highly as football, and we love our football here!

First things first, I have to complement Anchor Bay for knowing how popular this set is (if you didn’t see the 2011 UFC Ultimate Collection, you can check it out here to do a double header with this years even better collection.) they’ve released a month earlier than last year knowing that this will make any MMA fan’s Christmas Holiday wishlist. Yes, it’s that great of a collection. It’s on DVD, but the picture quality is really great so I didn’t even gripe that it isn’t being out on my precious blu-ray. You’ll easily forget as seeing it on a big screen tv looks amazing.

Not only does it look great and has every fight from July 2011 to June 2012 including quite a few that have never been released, and from the sound of it won’t be. So this makes this collection that much more valuable, and it less than $100 on Amazon so when you break it down, it’s less than fifty cents a fight. Just think how much you’ve spent for those On Demand fights! This one is a great budget priced one that I can’t stop raving about!

To give you an idea of what’s inside, here’s a taste of some of the fights you’ll see in their entirety. Nate Diaz vs Jim Miller (remember the bloody tongue submission!), Rashad Evans vs Phil Davis, Dominick Cruz vs Urijah Faber, Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard 3, Jon Jones vs Rashad Evans, Quinton Jackson vs Lyoto Machida, Junior Dos Santos vs Cain Velasquez, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs Dan Henderson and the incredible list goes on.

Last year’s had special features which I really didn’t get into so they’ve been eliminated from this set, and with 200 fights you will never miss them. Heck, you don’t even need them. For any serious MMA UFC fan, this set is the real deal that you HAVE to have. No ifs, ands or buts about it!

The Harry Potter movie series was a huge event, and the upcoming Harry Potter Wizards Collection is going to make sure you remember it with thirty-one blu-ray discs. Easily a must for any big collector and we’ve got a couple new clips showing more behind the scenes below.

Many times movie franchises will wait years before putting out something as massive as the Harry Potter Wizards Collection hoping to keep milking out more money from fans, but not so with this one. They know that to have a price take just under $350, they better make sure fans are willing to shell out that kind of money. This is one of those rare times it’s so worth getting this one.

It’s actually a rather beautifully designed that weighs 19 pounds. Yup, it weight matches the price and what you get with it is just astounding. The box itself is like a cool magic trick. When you open the lid inside is a cabinet with drawers to pull out plus some spring-triggered secret compartments that will bring out the little kid in anyone. When it arrived here, even the most jaded of souls Miss Sashay crept out of her office and once we opened the lid, she just couldn’t stop playing with it like a Barbie’s dreamhouse.

For me it was like a cool little treasure hunt since each of the hidden areas holds various Harry Potter movie memorabilia and there’s even the Horcrux or a copy of Salazar Slytherin’s locket that was seen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I.

I don’t need to talk about the movies since any fan has seen them all at least once, but seeing them like this will be a treat for anyone who hasn’t seen them or a mega fan that can revisit and watch the evolution of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Ruper Grint growing up before you eyes.

So along with a DVD, Blu-ray and Ultraviolet copy of each movie, this is an idea of just some of the special features which are very special indeed. I rarely review a blu-ray release based solely on the design and special features, but this is one that deserves high praise for creativity.

Chained brings Jennifer Lynch back to her horror genre roots in a film that works most of the time with Vincent D’Onofrio doing creepy as only he knows how. Check out the opening scene from the film below and two readers will be getting blu-ray copies of the film next month.

Chained is definitely one of Jennifer Lynch’s most complete horror films as it feels like a real structured film carried from beginning to end unlike some of her past ones. There are times in the film where it feels like it’s dragging a little, but thankfully Lynch makes up for this with quite the wallop to the senses with a film that that covers the topics of free will and morality in a pretty stark and harsh fashion. It will make you wonder what you might do in the same type of situation, and that is where this film can make the viewer have the uncomfortable feel. I wasn’t expecting to run my review of the film, but it’s happening anyway…

It’s a simple plot, but with horror those are the one that work the best as they can become an intense character study rather than just throwing in gore here and there thinking that’s what horror is all about. Lynch knows the genre, and after a few films, she’s found her stride with Chained. It’s not perfect as the conversations can sometimes become a bit melodramatic, but the carrying theme throughout asks if being around evil long enough can turn a person that way. Films like Das Experiment (based on a true story) show that if a person is surrounded by something long enough and is made to feel like it’s not their responsibility for this happening, oftentimes, they’ll enter into the fray.

D’Onofrio plays a psychopath who has kidnapped a very young boy with no other intent than to keep him chained to a wall like a slave. Years pass and the young boy has become a teen-ager while the psycho continues to bring scared defenseless women home for killing. We hear about these type of stories in the news all the time, but they leave the news cycle just as quickly as the hit our senses and many times these cases are forgotten…unless it’s a young blond pretty white girl. Lynch aptly tackles what happens in these stories, and while some of the flashbacks scenes are a little jarring and take you out of the film, she quickly reigns you back in. D’Onofrio plays this role as you would expect; sometimes over the top, but he’s able to keep you watching him as he truly understands his characters motivation no matter how messed up they are. Lynch has found her stride in horror, and I’m looking forward to her next foray.

Best Movies Ever Rating: B
After several so so films, Jennifer Lynch has found her stride in the horror genre with a chilling film where Vincent D’Onofrio does a role that he was born to play. Sometimes uneven in tone, Chained is a very satisfying horror film not for the weak of heart.

Taking two genres like superheroes and found footage and making them seem fresh is a rare feat but ‘Chronicle’ manages to do just that and make it look easy!

Josh Trank did what would seem impossible…make us like found footage films again, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy; he just makes it look that way. ‘Chronicle’ was a big hit that took many by surprise for making something as old as the superhero origin story and making it fresh without following the typical plot recipe. In these types of films, the heroes are supposed to meekly test their newfound powers much like a adolescent who’s just learned that his body can do things for him that are a little surprising but feels very good. This film is like that where three teen-agers are suddenly imbued with special powers and they do what most of us would probably do at first with them. Have some fun and play with people.

At the opening of the film we meet poor Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan), whose life just plain sucks! He seems predestined to spend his life in perpetual fear and abuse. This is the type of kid you’d expect to wind up bringing the gun to school, but instead he focuses on capturing his daily life injustices on film which further alienates him since many people hate being filmed without their permission. Yep, he’s the outsider who becomes even more of an outsider with his camera making teens either want to show off for him or hit him for capturing moments they don’t want captured. His sole friend, Matt Garetty (Alex Russell), seems to stick with him more out of habit and having someone around when he’s feeling uncomfortable. We’ve all had that friend who is more of a downer, but for some reason we keep them in our life. That’s Andrew.

So the two along with Steve Montgomery (Michael B. Jordan) find a mysterious big black hole in the ground and as any teen would do, just go deep inside to find out what’s there. Inside is a rock that glows blue and hurts their ears, but it’s not until the next day they realize the power it has. Once the boys discover they have some cool powers, they do exactly what a typical teen would do. They want to play and seek revenge. At least in Andrew’s case, you’re rooting for him to kick the crap out of his abusive father. The first half of the very quick 83 minute film is fun and thrilling as the boys mess with people for fun, but then things shift pretty quickly after that into some dark territory. The film reminded me slightly of ‘The Craft’ where the power was easy to seduce you to the dark side and Andrew is easy prey for that, and his low self esteem demons quickly take over. The boys wind up turning on each other as you would expect, but the story never feels forced or pulls you out of the reverie of the moment. This is a film where you feel like you’re caught up in the action rather than just watching a movie.

What’s great is that Trank has taken the small budget and put it all up on the screen so it doesn’t feel like a small budget film. Naturally things will go awry and Andrew has a lot of anger and darkness in him after taking so many years of abuse, and it comes out in many ways and he takes a turn you’re not expecting. When you expect the film to zip like many superhero films it zags in a good way which makes this film one of the great surprises of 2012. I have to highly credit writer Max Landis for a script that is strong, and I can’t wait to see what the duo comes up with next!

The blu-ray pack comes with blu-ray, dvd and digital copy.  The extras are rather lean and include a directors cut which doesn’t offer up too much more.  It looks and sounds amazing and this film is worth it just for that alone!

I loved ‘Chronicle‘ when it was in the theaters, and this is that rare film that plays even better on blu-ray at home, and this edition has some pretty decent extras. It’s well worth picking up and watching alone or with your family since there’s some good moral lessons in there!

Yeah, the plot sounds like you’ve heard it before. Kid who’s a bully magnet, views life through a camera…almost like ‘American Beauty’ but with the found footage genre we’ve all grown to detest. Enter Max Landis and Josh Trank, who smartly turn the found footage and superhero genre around and look at it from a more realistic viewpoint. I can guarantee you that you’ll be pleasantly surprised by this smaller budget sci-fi action suspense film. ‘Chronicle‘ will remind you of those weird thoughts we all had as kids (and many times still in adulthood) of wreaking a little havoc on people who’ve pissed you off or just look like they could use some havoc.

They get way more than they bargained for, and a blue star looking object gives them some pretty cool powers.

One thing I liked was that Landis didn’t feel the need to give backstory to what the blue light thing was. Sometimes real life works like that where we don’t have an answer for everything. Not knowing where this came from keeps the mystery more real feeling. This film does allow you to have the suspension of belief, but you enjoy it the entire time, unlike ‘Cloverfield’ or ‘Apollo 18′, you were so distracted by the inane story, it was frustrating.

You may also be reminded of ‘District 9‘, but that’s because South Africa was used in place of Seattle. For a tight budget film, you can see that every dollar was put up the screen. Where many filmmakers would turn the story of bullying into a social message pounded over the audiences head, Trank and Landis have created characters that you can easily relate to and identify with, the moral aspect carries much more weight because of its subtlety. The makers of ‘The Ides Of March‘ could have learned a little from these guys.

Best Movies Ever Rating: A

Chronicle is a smart film that packs quite a sweet punch for such a small budget. It’s a fast paced movie with a cast that inhabits their roles and makes you believe their well drawn out characters.

‘Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale‘ might not be the right movie to show small children, but for us big kids, it’s a perfect Christmas movie that reminds us of the true origin of Santa Claus.

Even you readers chose ‘Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale’ for the top Christmas holiday movies to watch, and I couldn’t agree more. Rare Exports is part fantasy/black humor/horror/fun Christmas movie all rolled up into this cool twisted packet. What I enjoyed so much was that this odd little Finnish film follows the formulaic Christmas movie/feed good, but then it twists and turns them so you don’t know how it will end.

For you pure mainstream movie goers, this isn’t the film for you, as many will be scratching their heads wondering why Santa isn’t the Santa they grew up with. I’ve always been fascinated by the origin of Santa Claus and the deeper in the past you delve, the darker that origin is and Helander has embraced that to make a wonderful film that’s comically evil, and shouldn’t cause the uproar that ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night‘ caused in the 1980′s. Rare Exports has that fun 80′s feel to it though, and taking a lesson from Steven Spielberg, the tale is told through the eyes of a child (Jorma Tommila) who quickly gets wise to what’s fact and what fiction has been foisted upon him. In this version, Saint Nick takes his naughty list very seriously and those loveable elves we’ve grown accustomed to, are nasty old men who grab up these bad kids for their punishment.

The pacing of the film is great, and shot in Finland, the scenic vistas are breathtaking, especially on blu-ray. In this small town, the villagers hunt reindeer to survive, but as a nearby excavation is happening, something is amis and Pietari, our spirited boy with a hard scrabble life does a little spying. As in all horror movies, that kid that spies winds up having the bad come to him, and ‘Rare Exports‘ is no exception. You’ll be blown away by Tommila’s performance since he doesn’t try to be Macauley Caulkin in ‘Home Alone‘, he’s got a little bit of Bruce Willis ‘Die Hard‘ without the overacting. He drags around a teddy bear which makes him adorable but not cloying.

After the excavation unearths Saint Nick, kids around the village begin disappearing, and it’s up to Pietari to save the day with us rooting him on as he truly takes this role on with gusto and plays it perfectly. His father and the locals are a little dense at times and don’t want to believe that Santa Claus is this wretched old man, but it’s not long before they realize that if they don’t do something, all the children in that village are going to disappear forever. This Saint Nick finds even the smallest infraction worthy of punishment.

If you’ve not seen this one, and you like a little horror with your Christmas, ‘Rare Exports’ is a must see for the holidays. Plus you can foist it on your unsuspecting relatives who whine they don’t get to see you enough. After this one, they’ll leave you alone.

Visual/Audio:
Video is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen shining through at 1080p. This film looks amazing, and you’ll love the scenic backdrop, although you’ll see plenty of naked old man elves in pristine color.

Audio is every bit as good as the video, coming to us in a DTS-HD Master 5.1 track that is just phenomenal.

Extras:

Nicely enough, this blu-ray package comes with a dvd of the film for your friends that are still living back in that age.

A half hour making of featurette that is fairly standard with interviews and some behind the scenes footage.

You will also find four minutes of an animatic and computer effects comparison for those of you that love that.

A very cool featurette that I loved was Blood in the Snow, an all too brief featurette which shows off the cool art that was created for the production of the film and compares it to the scenes that weer actually shot.

Rounding out the disc are the Finnish Theatrical trailer and a Photo gallery.

‘Fraggle Rock‘ was one of the first original programmed shows on HBO long before ‘Sex and the City‘ and ‘The Sopranos‘ came along. Now here’s the complete series collection to bring back your childhood memories.

When I saw that ‘Fraggle Rock‘ was one of those Amazon Gold Box deals for the holidays, I had to write about it since this show brings back some great childhood memories. Remember the memorable song “Dance your cares away, Worry’s for another day. Let the music play, Down at Fraggle Rock!” Even now watching the video on You Tube, I have that tune stuck in my head and can catch myself nodding along at the desk. Between Jim Henson’s eccentric show with the Muppets plus other characters and those ‘Make Your Own Adventure’ books, my future in movies was set in stone. The imagination on this little cable show (back then HBO was a struggling little cable station playing reruns of ‘Deliverance’ late at night when we were supposed to be in bed and not watching that piggy scene) was amazing. Even watching it today, the show still stands up without feeling hackneyed or corny as many shows from our childhood can be.

Now for those of you that have no clue about this delightful show, Fraggle Rock is a cavernous underground ecosystem populated by the Fraggles. These peacefully hedonistic creatures are Muppet sized and they take great joy in music, lazing, playing and eating the constructions of the Doozers, gnome-like and hard hat wearing creatures who are the polar opposite of the Fraggles.

The Doozers are more Type A personalities who love to work, and the fact that the Fraggles eat their structures never seems to bother them as it gives them more purpose to continue building their structures. The star Fraggles are Gobo (the Fraggle that everyone strives to be) and his friends Mokey (the typical emo artist), Wembley (the goofy funny one), Boober (the neurotic mess) and Red, who reminded me much of Peppermint Patty with her more ‘boyish’ appeal.

‘Fraggle Rock’ was that rare show that parents felt save leaving their kids sitting in front of the tv to watch while kids loved it (and still do). It definitely had more of a liberal bent to it, but not so much as to get neo-cons all worked up. The biggest philosophy that the show had was one that is timeless: everything and everyone in the world is interconnected. Who can’t not like that…although I’m sure some righties would wind up seeing that as a message that it could lead human beings to want to be married to their goats or cows. This was a show where people were people and Fraggles were Fraggles plain and simple. The theme that seemed to run through all 96 episodes (get ready for a fun weekend with the kids on this box set!) was that all the citizens of ‘Fraggle Rock’ really didn’t realize their own influences on each other. Much like in today’s world where many don’t realize the lives they’ve touched, this is a very strong storyline that resonates well.

The other brilliance of the show was the music. Every episode has a couple new songs written by Philip Balsam (music) and Dennis Lee (lyrics) that go from being nice to actually quite good and stick in your head through the day. To be able to keep pumping out quality song material for 96 episodes speaks volumes about the passion for this show.

Unlike many shows that leave an open ended ending in hopes of being picked up again, ‘Fraggle Rock’ has a satisfying ending to the series. The message of the entire series is encapsulated perfectly with everything being connected, and the best part is that you feel satisfied after sitting through all those episodes.

I only thought I’d be writing a couple sentences about this show, but it’s obviously turned into a review, but after seeing just a couple episodes again, I loved the absolute brilliance of this oddly engaging little world straight from the mind of Jim Henson. It makes you crave more shows like this for kids that aren’t all about irony but something simpler.

Fraggle Rock is a must for any parent or all of you cool ‘single’ aunts and uncles to show your neices nephews. This show is brilliantly imaginative and will take many of you back to some great memories when trying to watch a cable tv show in a mostly cableless world made us quite inventive just to catch an inspiring glimpse of the Fraggles.
