It’s not surprise that Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby topped the weekend box office charts. Gatsby was definitely a marketing coup for a weekend that didn’t have much competition for female audiences. Iron Man 3 still took the top spot after doing some killer worldwide box office. 3D wasn’t a friend to Gatsby as most audiences chose the more traditional theaters, and the Mark Wahlberg Dwayne Johnson Pain and Gain took third place.

Things will change this upcoming weekend once Star Trek Into Darkness lands stateside. This sequel is one well worth checking out and all the expectation J.J. Abrams set with the first Star Trek movie are more than met this time around.

I don’t usually push a film so much, but this one definitely stayed with me. Jade Dornfeld plays Alyce, and like how Angela Bettis portrayed May, Dornfeld makes Alyce truly unforgettable. She truly takes on this role with a gusto and it’s one of those films that will easily stay with you long after you leave the theater.

Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger originally had low expectations, but with each trailer, people have quickly warmed up to the Johnny Depp Armie Hammer action film. You know from the trailers alone it’s going to be a lot of action on top of action. It was originally slated for a Memorial Day release but with the Starship Enterprise hovering over that timeframe, they wisely pushed it back to July 4th weekend.

The latest posters include a two-month teaser one with Armie Hammer riding his horse and an International one for the Israeli marketplace. Both of those are just below.

Zombie Strippers Jay Lee is back with a very sweet and tripped out horror film with Alyce Kills, starring Gossip Girl’s Tamara Feldman and James Duval (Donnie Darko). This one is easily bound to be a classic cult horror film in the vein of Excision. If you’ve seen that one, you’ll love Alyce! It’s a bizarre story about a young woman who accidentally knocks her best friend off a roof and the guilt that engulfs her entire being afterward. If you’re a Gregg Araki film like I am, you’ll be left wondering if he made a horror film as this has got that surreal feel that his film The Doom Generation had.

If you liked Takashi Miikie’s shocking Audition, you’ll be prepared for this one. You might also be reminded a little bit of one of my favorite horror movies May with the performance. This one I can’t recommend highly enough for all you true horror fans.

Lee’s last Zombie Strippers was okay, but he’s back in very fine form with this one that’s bound to hit that category of ‘hidden gem’. Jade Dornfeld plays Alyce and this is one role you won’t forget with this actress. She truly takes on this role with a gusto and it’s one of those films that will easily stay with you long after you leave the theater. I was a little hesitant seeing this one, but Lee has made a believer out of me in his horror film career and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next! This will also hit VOD on May 21, 2013.

Syfy’s Defiance is defeating the odds and proving that NBC’s risk of combining a game and original science fiction show could be paying off. We spent several days in their Containment Village at SXSW last month, and the smart marketing they’ve done has easily paid off. Now hopefully we’ll be able to get them to finally get us a new laptop since the container we stayed in leaked like you wouldn’t believe destroying our new one.

Jim Bittle from Sub Rosa was kind enough to inquire and see if we’d finally gotten our replacement laptop as the Container company Steel Space confirmed they would be taking care of it, but sadly, we’re still short our much needed laptop. I wouldn’t have minded so much if it was an older one, but it was one of our newer ones and the concierge people down at SXSW were so kind to assure us that we would have no worries getting it replaced, but you know how these things happen. It’s been frustrating since we had such a great trip and that has been the one thing that easily spoiled it as we didn’t raise a fuss about the other damage to our things from the container leak, but you do expect a little more response from the company who admitted the fault. Thanks again Jim for checking in, but as of now, Steel Space has still made no attempt to contact us in any way, shape or form.

Now onward to the good stuff!

Syfy’s new hit series Defiance maintained strong viewership levels during its second episode, drawing 2.4 million total viewers, 1.11 million Adults 25-54 and 1.06 million Adults18-49 in the Monday, April 22 telecast from 9-10PM (ET/PT). Defiance was the #1 cable drama in its time period among both key demos.

Viewers also flocked to the April 15 premiere episode. Including the first 3 days of DVR playback, the Adults 18-49 audience increased to 1.77 million (from 1.3 million live viewers).  The total viewership also grew to 3.5 million (from 2.7 million).

Next week Warehouse 13 joins Defiance with 10 all-new episodes at 10PM, comprising Syfy’s Powerful Mondays programming bloc.

Defiance’s luminous cast includes Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene and Mia Kirshner. Set in the near future, Defiance introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races.  In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully.  Each week, viewers follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, Missouri, while in The Game, players experience the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area.

The series is executive produced by Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica, Hellcats), who also serves as showrunner, Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica) and Rockne O’Bannon (Farscape).  Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest) directed the pilot; Michael Nankin serves as supervising producer/director on the series.  Defiance is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

This is one of those shows that takes a little warming up to as the pilot episode was fine but felt a little retreaded from movies and previous sci-fi shows. It really kicks in after the fourth episode as you connect much better with the characters and the story begins to take on a life of its own. You can catch it every Monday on Syfy at 9 PM (ET). Naturally, after the Thor: The Dark World teaser trailer hit this week, even more images have slipped out showing Chris Hemsworth working his mighty hammer on anyone who dares tangle with it. Above and below are a few more shots showing Hemsworth with papa Odin (Anthony Hopkins) along with sharing a laugh with Natalie Portman. 

There’ll be even more images coming plus we’ll have the latest clips from Hemsworth’s other film Rush with Ron Howard which looks pretty sweet. I’m still trying to get used to his bob-like hair in that one, but once he’s in the car and pounding that pedal to the floor, all those thoughts will quickly be forgotten.

Before Norman Reedus was known as good ole Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead, he made his mark in The Boondock Saints, and all you fans of him and it can get plenty of great gear. The Boondock Saints was the film that truly overcame all odds to be a cult favorite. Boondock Saints Movie Synopsis

Two Irish brothers accidentally killed mafia thugs. They turned themselves in and were released as heroes. They then see it as a calling by God and started knocking off mafia gang members one by one.
