Michael Phelps broke Olympic records having earned the most medals ever at the 2012 London Olympic Games, and now the tearing down cycle has begun first with the media claiming he would be stripped of this years medals because of the leaked Vuitton ad and now he’s accused of having a major gambling addiction. Can he just have some down time?

Geez, you’d think after making Olympics history and bringing home more medals for the United States than any other athlete in the world, Michael Phelps would be allowed to have some downtime. Ryan Lochte gets a pass to run around in a pink speedo getting trashed, but the media seems to be gunning for Phelps for some reason. First everyone jumped on the Vuitton ad that was leaked and stories are still popping up that the swimming phenom will be stripped of the 2012 London Olympic Games medals making him rescind his record breaking history. This is not the case, but it seems like an odd feeding frenzy has started to discredit the man who dedicated his life to swimming and making his country proud at each and every Olympic Games he was part of.

Last week, The Daily Mail popped up with a story preceding The National Enquirer’s that ‘close friends’ of Phelps are terrified that he now has a gambling addiction. The Enquirer is saying it’s exclusive, but the Mail already covered it. Maybe they’ve worked together on the story since they sound nearly identical.

The story states that now Phelps has retired, friends are worried that he’ll channel all his energies into his other passion Poker. These stories have slowly been growing, and you would think they could let the 27-year old actually have some fun now. If he really has an addiction, let him handle it and move on with his life. The press seem to love Lochte’s stripping down, showing up in speedos for parties and now heading to The Bachelor mansion. If Phelps did any of that, he’d be crucified and it’s definitely become quite the double standard. The infamous bong picture really got out of hand in the media, but I can guarantee you if a bong with actual weed was found in the possession of Lochte, it would just be played off as nothing but what’s expected of him.

Michael Phelps may swim and compete like he’s from another planet or superior species, but he’s a human being at the end of the day. It seems as if people have placed him on a crazy high pedestal that no one could ever live up to and when any whiff of controversy comes around, everyone’s bailing on him and pointing a finger as if they’d never succomb to those types of things. Everyone makes mistakes, but they don’t have to worry so much about them getting splashed all over the media before the real truth actually comes out. Why not honor the man for his amazing accomplishments for at least a couple months before the nasty feeding frenzy and knocking people down beging?

Sure, everyone loves to gamble . . . if they win. But, the person sitting next to you in church, the man in line at the grocery store, or one of your co-workers; any one of these could be involved with a gambling problem. Imagine your grandmother committing a crime to support her gambling addiction. I am a recovering alcoholic, gambler, and have recovered from other addictive behaviors. I published a book, Gripped by Gambling, where the readers can follow the destructive path of the compulsive gambler, a prison sentence, and then on to the recovery road. I recently published a second book, Switching Addictions, describing additional issues that confront the recovering addict. If a person who has an addictive personality, doesn’t admit to at least two addictions, he’s not being honest. Until the underlying issues have been resolved, the person will continue to switch addictions. These are two books you might consider adding to your library. I also publish a free online newsletter, Women Helping Women, which has been on-line for more than twelve years and is read by hundreds of women (and men) from around the world. (www.femalegamblers.info). I have been interviewed many times, and appeared on the 60 Minutes show in January 2011, which was moderated by Leslie Stahl. Sincerely, Marilyn Lancelot
