‘The Hobbit‘ keeps popping out new images, and the latest shows off Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins looking a little affected.

Surprisingly, ‘The Hobbit‘ movie’s Facebook page has been quiet since Christmas Even when Peter Jackson put out another video production diary holiday treat. Now this new image has come out via LA Times which gives a little dark look to Martin Freeman’s Bilbo Baggins. Most of the other images of Baggins have been very sunny and shiny, and this is the first one to bring some darkness in.

It’s an interesting overview quoting Jackson from last summer trying to sound as optimistic as possible after the thrashing he went through just to get ‘The Hobbit‘ made. It was bad enough dealing with a studio going through a high profile bankruptcy, then union issues and then an ulcer to top it all off for Jackson. Since this film is less intense than ‘The Lord Of the Rings‘ trilogy, the pressure is high on the director to make it just as thrilling…along with lucrative for the studio.
Co-writer Philippa Boyens has this to say about the long journey. “The story is very much a children’s story so deciding how to tell this was one of the first things we had to do. Who is the audience? It is very distinctly different, tonally, to Lord of the Rings until the very end and then you begin to see the world of Middle-earth opening up… but, having said that, we felt that it is the same audience [who will come to see the films] and then you start to worry because it is easy to repeat yourself. It is quite a similar journey, you’re going from the Shire to a large, dangerous mountain.”
Knowing that fans are expecting the same visuals and jaw dropping sets doesn’t help keep the pressure off either, but after seeing that first trailer, I don’t think we have to worry about being disappointed. A huge
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.
