America’s Next Top Model used to be that show you watched with anticipation, but it’s become that old habit we can’t drop yet so here’s Tyra Banks using her Harvard degree for a College Edition with a new line-up of judges, but sadly, Kelly Cutrone wasn’t axed with the good ones like Jay Manuel, Jay Alexander and Nigel Barker.
I have watched Tyra Banks and her America’s Next Top Model since it started on a whole other network that got combined into the CW. It was such a fun show that seemed to take the modeling world seriously and give girls a chance to enter that world who wouldn’t normally have been able to. Then the Angelea Preston controversy happened which turned many longtime fans off. Then the British Invasion season hit with a spectacular dud and ratings continued falling for the show. Tyra Banks went on a bloodbath firing spree getting rid of what made the show feel like it still had some integrity Jay Alexander, Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker.
Back in April when the firing spree hit, sources over at the CW told me that if things didn’t pick up quickly, there wouldn’t be a Season/Cycle 20. I got a call from them this week and this College Edition isn’t sounding like things are getting better. Here’s what they had to say. “The CW wasn’t happy with last cycle’s ratings so they pushed Top Model to the awful Friday slot. Tyra was furious, but it feels like the show is still in a downward spiral. The core of the show is gone after the two Jay’s and Nigel were cut loose, but they’ve all said that they’re glad to be off the sinking ship.”
These were the same sources that said there would be a fashion blogger on the show (which there is) along with a social media element. Sadly, that’s there too with the new voting system which just spells disaster. As you’ll see in the very big photo gallery down below, most of the images spell out what will be happening over this entire season so no fun surprises either. It sounds like the only surprise now is for the show to make it another season.
Tyra Banks and Kelly Cutrone will be joined by fashion blogger Bryanboy, the show’s new social media correspondent, male model Rob Evans, photo shoot stylist Johnny Wujek and “movement mentor” Jonte.
Here’s how the confusing new viewer voting system worked since the show is taped ahead of time. All during this summer, Tyra encouraged Top Model to vote and comment online about this season’s photo shoots in real time as they happened. I know, who bothers voting on a reality show when it’s not even on the air yet, but there’s always people out there that will Here’s the CW to explain how that works:
“The audience vote is compiled from an average of each of the viewer’s numerical online and mobile votes. These scores will be added to scores from Banks and the judges to help determine who is eliminated each week. Also, in a new twist, the girls who have already been eliminated will have the opportunity to return to the competition via votes on their photo shoot pictures, which will allow the audience the chance to save their favorite model.”
Yes, I know, how in the world can they keep viewers (what’s left of them, at least) from knowing who won ahead of time? It appears that they’ve had all the models participate in all the photo shoots ala how Project Runway has contestants take part in the big Fashion Show so as not to give anything away. The gallery below is every one of those pictures so you can judge for yourself…but it’s too late to have any impact now though. It’s hard to say how much impact the voters who did do this will have on the outcome. Past judge Janice Dickinson would have plenty to say on that, I know.
It also appears that both CoverGirl and Vogue Italia have dropped out of the grand prize package too. Remember when Andre Leon Talley really heightened the show with his fashion background but naturally Tyra got rid of him. For me, that’s the last good bearable season of the show. Now, the lucky girl gets a fashion feature in Nylon Magazine, as well as $100,000 cash and campaigns with Nine West and Smashbox Cosmetics, in addition to a modeling contract with LA/NY Models and being named the face of America’s Next Top Model perfume Dream Come True.
The girls will get Alicia Keys as a mentor for the video challenge this season at least. May Tyra would be wise to bring in a surprise like Angelea Preston since that would definitely get her a much needed ratings spike.
