Terrence Malick is certainly making up for lost time with the announcement of four films in the works, and details from his Ben Affleck Rachel McAdams movie ‘The Burial‘ have surfaced.

You know times have changed when Terrence Malick, famous for one movie per decade, is suddenly stepping it up with the announcement of four movies! This week brought news of two new projects both starring Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett—“Lawless,” along with rising indie star again,Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara, and “Knight of Cups” with Isabel Lucas. Now another one that’s been talked about for a few years now is his IMAX doc ‘Voyage of Time‘ that Malick’s been working on still. We’ve gotten so accustomed to years going before any news of an upcoming film so all those 2012ers will take note that strange things are occurring for next year.

We were treated with ‘Tree Of Life’ this year, and there were some, including star Sean Penn, who were left scratching their heads wondering what it was all about, but with a Malick film, many times we’re left deciding for ourselves what the real message is. That’s the beauty of filmmakers like him where it truly is a work of art.

Now the one film we’re assuming could be hitting screens next year is already in the can and it stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel Weisz, Javier Bardem, Barry Pepper, Charles Baker and Jessica Chastain. Reshoots were done this past spring so that leaves Malick plenty of time in edit to have this out in time for a Cannes premiere. He’s one of the few filmmakers that’s not about ‘leaking’ images or divulging too much information about his films until he’s ready. Details have surfaced since last year, but the LA Times uncovered this much which sounds more in line with a Malick film.

‘The Burial’ aka ‘Untitled Terrence Malick Project’ “concerns a philanderer (Affleck) who, feeling at loose ends, travels to Paris, where he enters a hot-and-heavy affair with a European woman (Kurylenko). Said Lothario returns home to Oklahoma, where he marries the European woman (in part for visa reasons). When the relationship founders, he rekindles a romance with a hometown girl (McAdams) with whom he’s had a long history.” The one thing we all can be assured of is that this film will be beautiful to look at. It sounds like the director is getting more autobiographical in his subject matter.

Knowing that he’s got two films to shoot in 2012, I have a feeling that Malick will be getting this one out in time, especially since StudioCanal have already purchased the UK distrib rights. Don’t be shocked that Malick held on to U.S. rights waiting for a Cannes premiere. I’m wondering if he’s after going so deep with ‘Tree Of Life’, Malick is feeling his own mortality now and is rushing to do all the films he’s always wanted before it’s too late. That puts all of us fans in a win-win position.
