Chris Pine will be heading up two of the bigger films of 2013 now that Jack Ryan has been given a Christmas Day opening just seven months after Star Trek 2 hits the summer theater crowds. He’s got the Taylor Kitsch heavy mantle, but at least these two films should be much better than poor Kitch’s choices.
Chris Pine is currently shooting the Jack Ryan reboot with Kevin Costner, and he’s turning into the reboot man as he helmed Star Trek which fans flocked to, and he’s trying to do the same for the Tom Clancy man in 2013. That’s a very good year, and those two films can easily rival Channing’s Tatum’s four films this year. (G.I. Joe Retaliation got bumped to next summer with some major overhauling, and you can bet it will steer very clear of Star Trek 2′s opening weekend).
With that comes a lot of pressure as Paramount wants to make sure that Star Trek wasn’t just a fluke and is doing everything with J.J. Abrams to make sure it’s just as big a blockbuster movie come May 17, 2013. Even Abrams made sure that he was totally happy with the script before coming back aboard the Starship Enterprise and he’s gone to amazing lengths to keep as much under wraps as possible. The baddie is still a mystery and everyone keeps chanting Khan. Cast members have openly said that their contract which is quite lengthy makes sure not a word is said and it’s working. Even with the leaked shots and video, most of the film is still a mystery which can be a nice thing going into the theater.
Pine recently told Total Film that the sequel will have humor in and the character will really be developed much further this time. He also stressed that the crew will be put into some genuine frightening situations. I think one of the biggest frights keeping the actor up will be the weeks leading up to when both films open next year when many will be using Kitsch as a cautionary Hollywood tale.
