2010 saw 3D movies have some major growing pains after ‘Clash Of the Titans‘ served a wake up call to the studios so we decided to put together the best and worst 3D movies of the year.

James Cameron spoiled all moviegoers with ‘Avatar’ last year so expectations were set very high. Then came Tim Burton’s ‘Alice In Wonderland’ which had a few grumblings, but mostly people loved the visual wonderland…then came ‘Clash Of the Titans‘ and that brought some reality back to the studios. The interesting thing was that ‘Alice In Wonderland’ was shot in 2D and converted like ‘Clash Of the Titans’, but the latter just threw it together quickly to make more money and audiences felt it. ‘Titans’ still did fine at the box office, and it’s getting a sequel, but the backlash from quickie 3D conversion was heard loud and far.
From our count, there were 20 film released in 3D in 2010 with 30 scheduled to be released in 2011. Ticket sales were down this year, but total box office grosses were up over 2009. This was only because of the 3D upcharge on ticket sales. Right now, the studios are only able to gloat about a bigger year end box office, but that’s only because of new ways to raise ticket prices. This can only go on for so long, and like with anything, 3D will become boring if the studios continue pumping out films that aren’t really worth the extra money spent on that surcharge.
So, here’s out take on the best and worst 3D movies of 2010. Usually I’m not a big one on animated films, but this year, they converted me.
2010 BEST 3D MOVIES
How To Train Your Dragon

I’m not a big animated film guy, but this year, I saw more animated ones that really reminded me how good they can be. ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ was a pretty quiet and under the radar film that just kept going at the box office. This story was a really sweet one without feeling like something that could induce nausea. The 3D looked great too.

‘Toy Story 3′ really surprised me since I didn’t expect to be moved as much as I was. I’ve heard so many people bashing this film, and I don’t know if it’s because it was reviewed so well and topped the 2010 box office or what, but I was torn between ranking this above ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ since the stories were so strong. The only thing that kept me was that I didn’t feel like the 3D effects were as strong as in Dragon so this one came under it. The feelings that ‘Toy Story 3′ brought up of growing up and having to leave some things behind got me pretty teary and I can be a real cynical one.
Despicable Me
Another sweet little film that looked great and still appealed to my less cynical side.
Megamind

This was another film that had many saying how much they hated it, but again, I loved the different storyline of a bad guy who gets rid of the good guy and realizes that he misses him. Will Ferrell got another film that works in his favor and Brad Pitt playing egoist superhero was worth the 3D upcharge.

Tangled

Yup, another animated film at the top of the list. I wasn’t expecting much from ‘Tangled’ for some reason, but Disney hit this one out of the park going back to what they do best…fairy tales. This one was worth the watch.

Alice In Wonderland

Tim Burton’s remake of the classic ‘Alice In Wonderland’ looked like it had been converted, but not nearly as bad as ‘Clash Of the Titans’. Johnny Depp made for a very cool Mad Hatter.

Tron: Legacy

Disney tried to force feed ‘Tron: Legacy’ down everyone’s throats, and all the money they spent trying to push it on us should have gone into making a great story. While it looked amazing (and the only reason why it put it on this list) and sounded incredible, the rest was quite a letdown.

2010 WORST 3D MOVIES
This list seemed to take a little longer to compile since there were some real stinkers put out and figuring out which stunk worse than the others wasn’t that easy. I won’t even bother putting up trailers for these since they’re just not worth even looking at.
My Soul To Take

This film felt like Wes Craven just gave up on original horror. It just plain sucked, and the fact that the guy who recreated the horror genre twice made this crapfest was quite a shocker in itself. 3D did nothing to help this lame ass movie.
Resident Evil: Afterlife

This schlockfest should have been just called Milla takes a paycheck since it felt like this would be her only reason for continuing this series that has long kicked that horse dry.
Saw 3D

I’m holding Lionsgate to their promise that this is the very last film in the franchise that started sucking many film ago.
Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

Yet another time when the studio assumes that kids will see anything that has a cat and dog talking. It didn’t work for Yogi Bear, and it certainly didn’t work for this one either.
The Last Airbender

Another Shyamalan movie, another crapfest. When will this guy get some people around him that will tell him the truth about his films???
The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Trader

I loved the first ‘Chronicles of Narnia’, but this last one will hopefully will be the end of the franchise that should have ended after the last film.
So that’s our list of what we thought were the best and worst 3D movies for 2010. We will give a nice mention to ‘Jackass 3D’ since they were creative with using their appendages for cool 3D effect.
